Boomers and Beyond at the Beach...in Delaware. by Active Adults Realty

We back Jack Markell for Governor of Delaware, as you can see in this photo taken back in August at the Delaware State Fair. For those of you who live in Delaware and are registered to vote, we hope you will take a few minutes to visit Jack’s web site and get acquainted. This is such an important time in Delaware and in the rest of the country; we need leaders with the business experience and political acumen to take us in the right direction.

It is so hard to pick a top ten when there are so many great places to dine in this area. On an interview back in the day, Bill was asked about his favorite hobby. When he said dining out, the interviewer told him that wasn’t a hobby. Bill’s response was that he must be confusing it with eating out! We love to dine at good restaurants and that can be a fine dining establishment or a great place for pizza or a sandwich. Here are some of our favorites. Enjoy!

  1. Cultured Pearl, our favorite Sushi restaurant at the beach. They have a full Japanese menu but Kathy always orders the Sushi. On Rehoboth Avenue.
  2. Fins, where the fish is always fresh and the service wonderful. Bill’s favorite is the Cioppino. Also on Rehoboth Avenue.
  3. Big Fish Grill is a tie for always fresh fish selection. They also have a carry out next door and provide catering. Last year, they catered our client appreciation party and everyone loved the seared tuna. Located on Rt. 1 in Rehoboth.
  4. Half Full is my idea of good pizza. Individually sized and terrific crust. Terrific wine selection by the glass and it’s open late in downtown Lewes.
  5. Fish On! at the Villages of Five Points in Lewes offers great seafood with a creative touch. A friendly bar and staff make this a place you’ll visit again. Tell Fred that Kathy and Bill sent you.
  6. Striper Bites on Savannah Road in Lewes is where the locals go for Happy Hour and stay for dinner. Another great seafood restaurant at the beach and just a few door down from our RE/MAX office.
  7. Gallucio’s is also now open in Lewes at the Villages of Five Points - a great choice for good Italian food and classic pizza with a crisp crust. This web site is for the original Gallucio’s in Wilmington but the food is just as good in Lewes.
  8. Café Sole, on Baltimore Avenue in Rehoboth Beach, is a consistent choice for lunch or dinner, for a sandwich or a wonderful dinner creatively prepared.
  9. The Buttery is the perfect restaurant in Lewes for lunch on the porch or an elegant special occasion dinner by candlelight. It is also right across the street from our RE/MAX office.
  10. Seafood Thai, located on the beach block of Rehoboth Avenue, is a great find if you enjoy very good and reasonably priced Thai food in a friendly atmosphere. Try the Tofu!

This year was the 8th anniversary of our meeting at Jazz Festival 2000! We celebrated in front row seats and you’ll see some of the great photos I was able to get below.

We heard a lot of good music the past few days, but this afternoon we heard great JAZZ! My favorite saxophone player Kirk Whalum with Rick Braun on the trumpet, both of whom we have seen many times in Rehoboth Beach and other jazz festivals. Then there was Eric Darius and Bob Baldwin who we saw for the first time today. What an afternoon to bring this 19th Annual Jazz Festival to an end for us.

Here’s a few scenes of this afternoon’s concert for you. Hope you see you at next year’s event -

Rehoboth’s Secret:  Ed Shockley, Doug James, Keith Mack performed Saturday afternoon at the new Rehoboth Beach Theater of the Arts and it was a great venue for live music. This theater used to be a Methodist Church so the acoustics were great. We look forward to many future events here.

Then, Saturday evening was Joe Piscopo’s Tribute to Sinatra and much more. He treated us  to some old Saturday Night Live bits, sang some favorite Sinatra tunes and played the keyboards, sax, flute, drums and did them all well.

Have you ever noticed that sometimes you play the best golf on the best golf courses? When The Peninsula first opened and they hosted a group of Realtors for a golf outing, I played some of the best golf I had played in years. We love it that we have clients that have bought vacation or retirement homes at The Peninsula because sometimes they invite us to play as a Guest!

Playing a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course is a treat and when it is located at a site like The Peninsula on the Indian River Bay, the views are distracting to say the least. I have had to hang up the golf clubs for a while, but Bill just played The Peninsula the other day and it is one of his favorite courses. If your idea of an ideal retirement is resort living close to home, The Peninsula is as good as it gets!

The 19th Annual Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival takes place this week! More than any other event, this is one of the reasons Bill and I moved to Coastal Delaware. This year, we have bought tickets to The Neville Brothers on Thursday evening, October 16th as well as Joe Piscopo’s “Tribute to Sinatra”. Aaron Neville is one of Bill’s favorite singers and this is our first chance to see the Neville Brothers with Aaron in person.

Part of the fun is to catch the local acts at restaurants throughout town. We always try to catch Vessa at Cloud 9 and Pam Miller over at the Cultured Pearl, one of our very favorite restaurants. Back in 2000, Bill and I met at Sir Guy’s, now Fins, where Alfie Moss and Dexter Koonce were performing. In fact, when we were married in January 2003, Alfie and Dexter performed at our wedding! We consider this Jazz Festival our 8th Anniversary and we hope to see you there.

Time permitting, we are hoping to get tickets to see “To Grover with Love” including one of my favorite Saxophone players Kim Waters and “The New Urban Jazz Party” with my all time favorite Saxophone player Kirk Whalum.

Come back for some pictures and updates on this year’s event.
