What Will I Do Once I Retire In Delaware? How About Volunteering?

There are numerous Delaware volunteer organizations looking for retirees like you to help out.

Worried about what you will do with yourself once you retire in Delaware? How about volunteering? Real Estate Broker, Kathy Sperl-Bell of Active Adults Realty in Delaware, explores the numerous Delaware volunteer organizatiosn that are looking for volunteers and support from retirees. It can be a great use of your time.

What kind of volunteer opportunities will I find?

Today I want to talk about organizations where you can volunteer your time.

These organizations depend on the experience, talents and commitment of our young retirees. Becoming active with groups of like-minded people is a great way to get acclimated quickly to your new surroundings. Regardless where you settle in Delaware, there are some major organizations that are always in need of volunteers. Organizations like Habitat for Humanity (https://www.sussexcountyhabitat.org)

Our team here at AAR is getting ready to participate in a build on May 31st in West Rehoboth. We have participated in builds over the years and it is always fun and rewarding. Here in Sussex County, we have become great friends with Kevin Gilmore, the Executive Director, and many of the staff and volunteers.

Other great Delaware organizations that we support on a regular basis are Meals on Wheels, the Food Bank of Delaware, and Toys for Tots.

What about the Arts?

Then there are organizations dedicated to the arts. Bill and I, as well as our agent Al Willis and his wife Alice, have become very involved with Clear Space Theatre in Rehoboth Beach. We have joined the Producers Circle, a group of local business people formed to spread the word about live theater here at the beach. There are many ways to become involved or volunteer to help during the season. If you love theater, I know you will really enjoy Clear Space.

Then there is the Rehoboth Beach Film Society, the Freeman Stage down in Selbyville, near Fenwick Island, and Coastal Concerts, here in Lewes. All phenomenal organizations with full calendars and these are just a few of many.

In Dover you will find volunteer opportunities at the Schwartz Center. In Wilmington, you can volunteer at the Delaware Art Museum or The Grand or become a tour guide at the Rockwood Park Museum.

Throughout Delaware, Historical Societies need your time and contributions. From the New Castle to Milton and Lewes, the Historical Societies always need volunteers and there are many ways to both volunteer your time and support fundraising efforts.

Just this past Saturday, March 24th, the 2018 Teller Wine Expo was a benefit for the Lewes Historical Society. It was held at the new Lewes History Museum & Community Center, a fascinating venue for local events. What could be better than an afternoon of tasting great wines, sampling gourmet tapas and bidding on tables full of great silent auction items.

As I was putting this together, I came across a great site called Volunteer Delaware that has a comprehensive list of organizations all over Delaware, categorized by type, location, age and interests. I’m glad I found it and I hope it will help you get out and get involved.
