Did your life revolve around your job, your accomplishments, your family and a schedule that managed your life for the past 30 or 40 years? Did you dream about the day you could leave it all behind and retire in an active adult community with no children and nothing to do but relax and pursue your passion?
Be careful what you wish for. That dream retirement in a new community with all of the things you never had the time to do might not be enough to fill all those hours you used to spend working.
- What will you do with your time and experience?
- Can you really afford to retire or will you turn your avocation into a new vocation or your passions into a new career?
What does retirement mean to this generation of Baby Boomers? If we make it to 65, chances are we will live another 25 or 30 years. That’s a long time and a lot of hours to fill with what? Is Mah Jong enough? Taking a daily swim? Yoga and Tai Chi Classes?
For some the dream is actually a nightmare. Here are some of the comments I hear when I spend time with my Buyer clients.
- What will I do (when I retire)?
- Who will I even be?
- I need a basement and a 3-car garage so I have someplace to go, something to do.
Retirement in the classic sense is not for everyone. Sometimes we feel more like Counselors than REALTORS as we help our clients think seriously about their options.
